…Plays that stretch the mind, soothe the spirit, prompt our laughter,
   and guide us into a deeper understanding of the human condition.

The VISION of The Playmakers is a community comprising people who choose a Playmaker production as their first choice for a night out; a community with audiences and participants that recognize, demand, and support theatre of high quality. This assumes the importance of theatre, access to it, and the desire to experience it. It further assumes that the theatre experience is of high quality, worth the money, and enjoyable. The MISSION of The Playmakers is to increase demand for theatre and the performing arts through two basic means: 1) supply theatre programs that are of high artistic quality and give audiences pleasure, and 2) provide theatre education opportunities that will give audiences and artists of all ages the skills and knowledge to enrich their experience with theatre.

Our History

The Grove Community Playmakers, Inc. was founded by Suzanne and Jim Boles in 1995 and presented its first production, The Music Man, that July. The success of that production convinced the participants that there was a place for theatre in the Grand Lake area. A Board of Directors was organized and a 501(c)(3) tax status was obtained.

The program of The Playmakers includes:

    A Season of five productions for the public;
    An active Readers Theatre group including a new program, The Circuit Readers, who perform in senior organizations and assisted living centers in surrounding counties in the Grand Lake O' the Cherokees area;
    A Comprehensive Youth Theatre program, which
        introduces all Grove Public School students in grades 4-8 to theatre through classroom programs and the performance of a play each year for 5-8 grade students;
        offers an after-school theatre training three days each week during the school year,
        presents a youth production as one of the regular season plays, normally in the summer.

The Playmakers have been supported by over 200 area businesses and 350 individuals. This illustrates a culture in our area that believes in the importance of the arts for their children, economic development, and the quality of life. The City of Grove includes The Playmakers in its budget each year that allows the Playmakers to apply for matching funds. The Grove Public Schools allow Playmakers volunteers to use over one hundred hours of class time each year for the in-school program. Volunteer teaching artists spend many more man hours in these classes each year. The school administration also permits teachers to give extra credit to students who attend Playmaker productions or participate in them.
